San Jose Earthquake -- Follow Up

Monday, January 19, 2009

So sorry it has taken so long to update this blog about the earthquake that shook San Jose a week ago...

I just wanted to report that it took several days for us to realize the true impacts of the quake. Roads were / are closed and it was not until about 24 hours after the quake that the local Costa Rican news was even able to report what was really going on up there.

The area up in the mountains near La Paz and Peace Lodge, known as Vara Blanca, was hit very hard. There are bridges that have simply disappeared and roadways that are covered in debris from landslides. Much of the territory up there is or was not accessible by vehicle - only by horseback, foot or, most recently ATV.  The well known Peace Lodge hotel is closed due to structural damages and the fact that the roads are impassible. Several tourists were evacuated to San Jose after the quake by helicopter. There are reports of several deaths and missing people, but I do not know if these people are locals or tourists. Last I heard, there were 23 people missing.

All over the country, the Red Cross and local Rotary clubs are operating drop-off locations for much needed supplies like diapers, bottled water, non-perishable foods, blankets and toiletry items. The area has been declraed a national disaster and everyone is encouraged to help.

Once thing is for cetain, the future of tourism in the region is changed forever. If you were planning a visit to the region or Vara Blanca or Poas, please contact us for more information as to whether or not your visit will be possible.
