I've lived in Costa Rica for almost six years and have felt a few earthly tremors that would be categorized as mini-earthquakes. About one hour ago, I have had the displeasure of taking an involuntary part of a truly powerful, rock-you-out-of-your house earthquake that hit the Central Valley of Costa Rica. It started slowly, but within seconds my car started doing a little bouncy act followed immediately by my house, which rattled and shook so hard I ran out onto the street, in a surreal state of mind, shaking to the core.
Have you ever felt completely and utterly out of control, like no matter what you do you are powerless?
That's exactly what was going through my mind as I scrambled around absolutely scared *!@*#-less... not knowing where to go and what to save first, besides myself - obviously. I stood out on my street feeling like I was surfing the concrete, waiting for the tremors to turn my house to a pile of rubble or simply stop. Luckily the latter happened and now all is calm once again.
The details of this rattling experience are not on the news yet so I'll have to fill in the details later... but I can assure you... that I will remember with acute accuracy for years to come where I was and what I was doing when this earthquake hit.
Note: It is said that after an earthquake the weather changes. No actual scientific proof has been offered, but usually earthquakes happen at the tail end of the rainy season (December). The likelihood of such an intense one to happen in January is unusual; however, with crazy climate changes and global warming, who can really say.
