Hop into a canoe and paddle through river basins, networks of canals, mangroves, river estuaries and lakes. In particular Tortuguero National Park and Cano Negro Wildlife Refuge are ideal locations for peaceful canoe trips where amazing wildlife inhabits the surrounding forests.

Don't forget about the Sweet Gulf in the south Pacific (Osa Peninsula). Its calm waters and serpentine shore offers opportunities for camping and exploring where not many people have been.

Kayaking

With miles of coastline just waiting to be explored, ocean kayaking is a popular activity. You can rent ocean kayaks in just about any beach town and explore to your heart's content. 

The Central Valley region has several rivers suitable for whitwater kayaking. Class II to V rivers are located close to the capital city, including the Pacuare and Reventazon Rivers near Turrialba. And don't forget the world famous rafting town of Sarapiqui on the Caribbean side. Here you'll kayak Class I-IV rapids with professional guides.
