Caving in Costa Rica
See What the Bats See
What's the difference between stalactites and stalagmites? Once you've had a caving experience you'll know that the mineral formations dropping from the ceiling forming colorful icicle like spears are stalactites (they hold 'tite' to the ceiling) and the funky, colorful like pinnacles jetting out of the ground are stalagmites (because they 'mite' reach the ceiling). And the real wonder is when they meet together after millions of years midway and form slippery columns.
How and Where to do It?
The best place to see these underground wonders is at Barra Honda National Park, Costa Rica's lowest point - 240 meters below sea level, in the Santa Ana cave. A few other caving experiences can be had at Venado Caves near La Fortuna, Arenal. Kayakers can experience aquatic caves in Ballena Marine National Park.
