Warning, this is kind of sad but to be appreciated for the life and death cycles in nature.
This beautiful Risso dolphin died in Drake Bay the other day. It was in the shallow waters struggling and banging against the rocks so we moved it out from the rocks to deeper water, but it died and got stuck in the rocks again as the tide went out. We buried it... It was an immature dolphin so we were able to pick it up and move it (4 guys).
It was all scratched up from banging against the rocks.
It was interesting to see such a magnificent animal up close. Also honored to work with these guys at Jinetes de Osa... they treated the animal with such respect.
A little about Risso dolphins (Grampus griseus):
They are normally off-shore animals, in-shore sightings are rare. They grow to be about 10' long and weigh more than 650 lbs. Calves are born at 5' in length.
The Corcovado Foundation might dig up its bones in a few months to make an educational display.
