Birdwatching Tours on the Osa Peninsula

The Sierpe Terraba Wetland Reserve's elaborate network of canals and mud flats, lagoons, raffia swamps and mangrove forests are home to two of Costa Rica's endemic bird species plus numerous migratory and resident birds. It is a fabulous place to go bird watching.

Let us arrange a bird watching tour with our expert local guide and we will take you to our unique secret bird watching spots!

Option 1: Early Bird Special

From Sierpe we will journey 30 minutes on the Sierpe River through the beautiful Sierpe Terraba mangrove forest to one of our secret birding spots. Our expert, local birding guide will escort you on an easy nature walk (3.5 hrs) along an old road that passes between primary forest and mangroves. Here it is likely we will see ant birds, scarlet macaws, fly catchers, wood creepers and the endemic mangrove hummingbird and black cheeked ant tananger. This area is also the most important habitat for the largest population of yellow-billed cotinga.

Then we will have a picnic lunch and spend the rest of the afternoon in the boat touring the mangroves and looking for wildlife including  monkeys, raccoons, sloths, snakes, among other animals.  Return to Sierpe, a mangrove hotel or Drake Bay*.

Schedule: 5:00 am to 12:00 or 1pm.

Option 2: Birder's Paradise - the Osa Peninsula

Why not add a few days on to your trip and explore some more with our expert birding guide?

We will arrange for a hotel in the mangroves or in Drake Bay (based on your budget) and then on day 2 of this package we will take you to a more inland location where fly catchers, raptors, warblers, red-capped and orange-collared manakins, parrots and macaws, toucans and toucannettes are abundant. This area is at 400m elevation with primary rain forest and open disturbed areas.

We will return to your hotel in time for lunch. You will have the afternoon free and then in the late afternoon just before dark, we will take you on a night tour in a private reserve where you can see the poison dart frog sleeping, insects, frogs, snakes, bio-illuminecent mushrooms and more.
