Busy Season Alert

If you choose to visit Costa Rica during the high season (December - April), schedule everything well in advance. Make a deposit (by credit card) for your reservations and bring the faxed confirmation with you!

Cash

Cash goes a long way in Costa Rica.  Where ever you are always ask if there is a discount if you pay cash. I mean everywhere, from pharmacies to restaurants,  hotels and souvenir shops.

Credit Cards

Most of Costa Rica has caught up to the credit card world, however, at times--especially in smaller towns and villages, many places either charge you an additional 5 - 8% or don't accept credit cards at all. Have enough cash on hand and you will save a few bucks.

Crime Stoppers

There has been an increase in petty theft, pickpockets and car theft in the past few years. Keep all your valuables in your hotel safe except for the ones you need. Take only the amount of money you'll need for the day. And carry a copy of your passport. Lock up your car and don't leave anything inside to tempt anyone. Just be extra careful and you'll be fine.

Fill 'er up!

Gas is non existent in this neck of the woods, at least from a gas station. The closest station is before reaching Cahuita while traveling south on Route 36, past the Limon Airport about 30 minutes further (Pass the road sign that says 'Bomba 5km'). If you are truly out of gas and can't siphon any out of your friend's car, ask around and you'll be directed to the local “station”, more like someone's house with a tiny shed in the backyard, where they sell gas out of plastic liter bottles for $1 more per liter than at the gas station.

Off-Season Fun

When you travel during the off season, you'll get some benefits. You can get accommodations at discounted prices, tour companies often offer specials and you can even end up on a private tour for the price of a regular tour.

Over Pack!

Yes in this case, having a good supply of clothes will help. The Caribbean side of Costa Rica is humid and damp, with more than occasional rain showers.

Clothes take longer to dry here than in other parts of the country, don't skimp out now. Laundry services are available as an alternative.

The Wet Season

Just because it's raining doesn't mean you can't enjoy Costa Rica. All it means is that you'll play outside in the mornings, and sit in the window with a book and a refreshing drink in the late afternoon while enjoying the enchanting sounds of the forest.
