  • Quepos, one of the larger towns on the central Pacific coast has a style of its own.  It is a small urban city of about 6 square blocks.  This small port town is filled with shops, restaurants, bars, art galleries and a great outdoor market on the weekends. It is home to many local artists so the art galleries and street vendors often have items you won't find anywhere else in Costa Rica. The souvenir shopping here is also fabulous!

Quepos is the center of commercial activity where you will find banks, government offices and many travel / tour agencies.

  • Just over the hill from Quepos are Manuel Antonio and its National Park, teeming with wildlife.  Its about a about a 20 minute drive (7km)  to central Manuel Antonio. Early morning hikes in the Park are guaranteed (just about) to see the white-throated capuchin monkeys, whiptail lizards and a variety of song birds.  Coatis, two and three-toed sloths and black spinney tailed lizards are common too.  The beaches located inside of Manuel Antonio National Park are some of the most beautiful Costa Rica has to offer.  There is plenty of shade and gentle currents to help you lull the day away.  Also, a profusion of hotels, ranging from budget to luxury, line the road in between Quepos and Manuel Antonio.

Bit of History:

Before the 1800's and colonization by farmers, the Quepoa Indians lived off the rich, fertile lands. After the 1800's settlers transformed this land into banana plantations and built docks to ship bananas worldwide. Then in the 1980's African oil-palms replaced the bananas and now line the road leading into Quepos for miles. Today, the docks in Quepos are used for the sport-fishing industry, which is one of the major attractions of this area. Tourism is currently the areas leading employer and industry.
