Getting To Costa Rica

There are two international airports in Costa Rica: Juan Santamaria and Daniel Oduber International Airports. There is rumor of a third international airport opening up sometime within the next ten years in the southern region.

The main airport and most commonly used is the Juan Santamaria airport (airport code SJO). It is actually located in Alajuela, not San Jose, about 20 minutes from central San Jose. There are tons of airport taxis on hand to take you to your hotel upon arrival, or we can pre-arrange a private shuttle or taxi for you.

The other airport, Daniel Oduber (airport code LIR) is in Liberia, Jaco Rental Carslocated in the far northern reaches of the country very close to the Nicaraguan border. You should use this airport if you will be spending the majority of your time in the Guanacaste region (Nicoya Peninsula) including Tamarindo, Rincon de la Vieja, Ocotal, Gulf of Papagayo or any other of the Gold Coast's numerous beaches.

You might consider flying into David, Panama if your travels will primarily be in the southern region (areas like Pavones, Puerto Jimenez or Drake Bay). David is only one hour over the border from Costa Rica.

Now that You’re Here,  How do You Get Around?

It's actually quite simple. This is a tourist-friendly, multi-destination country so transportation is designed with foreigners in mind. We can help you plan how to get around from one place to another, because sometimes the logistics can get tricky if you're trying to visit several locations in a limited period of time.

For backpackers and folks on a budget, public transportation is convenient, affordable and generally very reliable. Shuttle services are another inexpensive way to get from place to place, with fares starting at $30 per person (one way).

Domestic airlines* fly to all of the most popular destinations and are by far the fastest way to get from point A to B. If you're a road-trip lover, there are plenty of rental car agencies all over the country, and we've got great driving directions making it less likely you will get lost. Make a reservation with us, and we will share our detailed driving directions with you.

Let us help you mix and match your transportation options based on your budgetary needs and comfort levels. We've been all round this counrty by car, bus and plane, so you'll be getting first hand information.
