One of, if not THE best places in Costa Rica to purchase real Cuban cigars is from Don Benigno.
Here I will quote a good friend of mine telling me the inside scoop:
"This guy is the real Cuban deal. He lives here and flies to Cuba to get his wrapping papers. He is family run Cuban. You go to his house / factory and watch the rollers. You'll also get to go into his giant humidor and get a free smoke. He has a bar and rocking chairs and you'll also get a free drink. Then you can buy what you like. My smoker buddies say they are tops!
He (Don Benigno) is a real genuine, great gentlemen and you will love to look around his place. He makes all the cigars for the American Ambassador and the coolest hand carved presentation boxes for VIP types."
He also says that:
"There are some very good Nicaraguan cigars available in Costa Rica to cheaper than the Cubans. All the Cuban fakes in the streets are Dominican rolled with well counterfeited labels and boxes in most cases."
