The Magical Yellow Castle

Saturday, September 20, 2008

Being a mom of a four year old, I am constantly inspired to show my son new stuff. The reality is, I'm really good at stimulating my son when we're traveling, or out adventuring the world, but when I'm at home I'm horrible. I can't get excited about building blocks, or reading little books--after one I'm pretty much done:) But once I'm out of the house I can practically win 'Mother of the Year' award! So I'm always on the look out for fun things to do. In the center of San Jose, by far one of the loveliest cities I'd visited, it's always a huge surprise to me to find a gem like the Children's Museum (Museo de los Ninos).

Children's Museum

This yellow castle shines like a star in the midst of aluminum roof tops and trash littered streets. The museum used to be the main prison of Costa Rica, but it's been renovated and turned into a great place for kids. The exhibit halls are full of educational themes covering all interests from animal exhibits, to petting zoos, to science and medical hands-on rooms, to earthquake and natural disaster exhibitions, to history and so much more! They also have a plane, helicopter, train, and a farm. Truly, the list is endless. I so highly recommend you go here!

On top of all that, they have summer and winter programs for kids from 3.5 to 11 years old. And being a diligent researcher, I got in on their first workshop for the 3.5 year olds. (I've been calling for the past 2 years, I think fun programs like this is what makes us whole!)

Children's Museum Workshop

Anyhow, since Costa Rica runs on the southern hemisphere schedule, our summers here are from the beginning of December to mid February. Now tell me, what do you do with a 4 year for that long? You investigate what is out there.

One thing that touched me the most, was the amount of effort that was put into this summer program. It runs one week programs at a time. At the end of each week, the teacher-who my son fell in love with, invited all the parents for a good bye ceremony. They made a photo presentation showing us what the kids did all week, gave us snacks and gave each of the children really good quality presents. Not the 99 cent store kind, but educational, kid friendly ones!

You don't have to be a resident or citizen for your kids to enjoy such benefits. If you're interested in more information contact me and I'll be glad to share with you!
