Bare Necessities of Life
You will find that even in this remote town, that most of the bare necessities of life can be found.
Communication with the Rest of the World:
Wireless and Internet:
You can find internet cafes scattered throughout town, and surprisingly enough, in this remote town there is widespread, high-speed wireless internet access. The Jungle Internet cafe sells blocks of wireless minutes for use almost anywhere in the entire town of Puerto Viejo.
Location: They are located on the same street as the Bread & Chocolate Cafe in the center of town.
Where do I get Money?
Puerto Viejo's only Bank, Banco de Costa Rica is open to the public during business hours and has a 24 hour ATM. It only accepts Visa and Plus network cards (no MasterCards).
Is there a Doctor in the House?
Red Cross (Cruz Roja) provides emergency service. A small public hospital in Hone Creek provides basic medical services (Clinica Hone Creek: 2750-0220).
The closest hospital is in Limon, with more advanced medical care.
Gas Stations: Fill 'er up!
Puerto Viejo has no gas stations. The closest one is about ten minutes north of Cahuita on Route 36.
If you are truly out of gas and can't siphon any out of your friend's car, ask around and you'll be directed to the local “station”, more like someone's house with a tiny shed in the backyard, where they sell gas out of plastic liter bottles for about $1 more per liter than at the gas station.
