A volcano is always a special treat to see if you've seen one before. Before I arrived to Central America I'd never laid eyes on one, and even though they have become almost the norm for me now, I still think that they are spectacular! And they are all different, so if you've seen one, you still should see more.
Of course, the most famous is Arenal. It is the most active, with lava flowing out all the time. There is a big eruption only one in 30-50 years. The last one occured in 2000, so it will probably be some time before the next big one. Arenal is too far away for a day trip, but there are plenty of things to do in the area that would make it worth a few days. There are beautiful hot springs to relax in, waterfalls a plenty, and a hike over 'hanging bridges' where you follow a well-paved path high above the trees and waterfalls. There is also a beautiful view of Arenal and the lake, as well as a chance to see some wildlife.
The closest volcano to San Jose and definitely worth a day trip is Poas Volcano.
Poas Volcano is located about one hour from the international airport and there are many wonderful tours that will take you there and to a few other interesting sites along the way where you can see butterflies and waterfalls. Contact me and I'll set it all up for you.
Poas volcano is truly an interesting experience. For one thing, people of all physical abilities and ages can get there. You practically drive to the very rim. It's an easy hike on a handicapped accessible trail to the rim of the crater where you can look down directly into the bubbling crater that looks like a mineral rich lake. What a great day trip!
